New Media

What is new media?

There are many answers to this question, but in my opinion, new media involves the new and different software programs that are coming out each year that involve the Internet and the many aspects of the computer world. New media is coming towards the world and the people in it in a fast pace; new media changes at a constant rate, which makes it hard for people within the world because once you learn one kind of software, by the time the new year or even month roles around, another software of its type has come about, and is much more interactive, and can be even better than the previous software. The term new media is a complex in itself because no one really knows what it means. New media can mean so much more than just the Internet, or software, but can mean the interconnections within computers.

A better definition of new media comes from Bailey Socha and Barbara Eber-Schmid from newmedia.org, “New Media is a 21st Century catchall term used to define all that is related to the internet and the interplay between technology, images and sound…The term “new media” seems to escape its very definition. Loosely, new media is a way of organizing a cloud of technology, skills, and processes that change so quickly that it is impossible to fully define just what those tools and processes are” (Socha and Eber-Schmid). From this definition, one can see and correlate the way the Internet, sound, pictures, and software all work as one in order to have a working computer and network system.

So, with new media coming into our lives constantly at every point within our day, we all have our own way of thinking about what new media is.
